Moments worth capturing

Don't reach for their biography. Reach for the specific things only you noticed.

• The sound of their laugh, and what usually causes it.
• The story they've told you a hundred times — and the exact part where their voice changes.
• Something they always say. Write it in their words, not yours.
• A ritual: the kitchen, the card game, the drive, the seat that was always theirs.
• A moment they made you feel safe, or completely believed in.
• The smell of their house, the sound of the front door, the thing that was always in the fridge.
• One thing about them you never want to forget.

What you probably already have

Before you write anything, look at your phone: a photo from last Christmas, a voicemail you never deleted, ten seconds of video where they're mid-sentence, a recipe card in their handwriting. Those carry more than a paragraph of praise.

If you'd rather ask them something

Alone, or with a few others
